Why We Join

When Caroline stepped through the doors into Grace Church, I knew it was the right place for us.

Good morning! I was asked by John to share my feelings and illustrate what Grace Church means to me. First, I would like to share with you all, a poem that was given to me about 20 years ago.

When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like you’re planning a vacation to Italy. You’re all excited. You get a whole bunch of guidebooks, you learn a few phrases so you can get around, and then it comes time to pack your bags and head for the airport.
Only when you land, the stewardess says, ‘WELCOME TO HOLLAND.”
You look at one another in disbelief and shock, saying, “HOLLAND? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I SIGNED UP FOR ITALY.”

I’ve spent a great deal of time this year searching, praying, and meditating on how to first recognize the light God created within me…

When I was very young, I attended a thriving, family-centered, Evangelical church and school. And I loved, loved, loved my school, Sunday school, and Vacation Bible School, One of the things I enjoyed most was singing, and I remember many of the Bible-based childhood songs I was taught. But the one that I recall the best is, “This Little Light of Mine.” I’ll spare you my singing voice, but it went,

This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine…

And so on…

Then there was a verse that went,

Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m gonna let it shine…

My young self didn’t understand the fullness of the verses in Matthew from which this song came..more..

Singing with this group has been spiritually rewarding, and has also improved my musicianship in all areas.

Thank you for inviting me to share, with all gathered here today, how this year’s stewardship theme of Shining Our Light speaks to me as an individual and as a member of this faith community.  I will share personal experiences from four distinct areas of service that I’m involved with here at Grace Church..more..

I am pleased to serve God through Grace Church.

In Matthew 5 we hear about putting our light high on a lampstand and to let that light shine for all people around us to see.

Many times we shine our light and we are not aware how bright it is until days, weeks, or years later when someone mentions it to you, or you are being thanked for something you did or said many, many days before..more..
